How to Calculate Paint for an Entire Room (and Why One Coat Is a Myth)
Painting one wall is a five-minute calculation. Painting an entire room means doing that same calculation four times — once per wall — and adding the results, because a room's total paintable area is not a single formula you can shortcut from its floor plan. This guide walks through a full room from empty measurements to a final gallon count, and then looks closely at a claim that costs a lot of people a patchy, uneven wall: that one coat is "basically the same" as two.
Why you can't estimate wall area from floor area
It's tempting to think a bigger room (more square feet of floor) obviously needs more paint, and in a loose sense that's true, but floor area and wall area aren't proportional in any way you can shortcut. Wall area depends on the room's perimeter and its ceiling height, not its floor square footage — a long, narrow room and a nearly square room can have the same floor area and meaningfully different amounts of wall to paint, because a long narrow shape has a bigger perimeter for the same enclosed area. The only reliable method is the one below: measure every wall, add them up, and never substitute a floor-area shortcut.
A full room, start to finish
Take a primary bedroom measuring 13 by 15 feet, with 8-foot ceilings, two doors (one to the hallway, one to a closet), and two windows. The perimeter is 2 × (13 + 15) = 56 feet, so the room's total gross wall area is 56 × 8 = 448 square feet — that's every wall in the room, added together, as if none of it had openings. Subtracting the two doors (2 × 20 = 40 sq ft) and two windows (2 × 15 = 30 sq ft) removes 70 square feet, leaving 378 square feet of actual paintable wall.
That 378 square feet is the number everything else is built on. At two coats, the total painted area is 756 square feet; divided by a 350 sq ft/gallon spread rate, that's 2.16 gallons needed, which rounds up to 2.25 gallons (nine quarts) since paint is sold in quarter-gallon increments, not decimals. The one-coat number, run the same way
Run the identical room at one coat instead of two, and the total painted area is just 378 square feet (net area times one coat), for 378 ÷ 350 = 1.08 gallons needed — rounding up to 1.25 gallons, or five quarts. On paper, that looks like the expected result: roughly half the paint for half the coats. But the gallon count was never really the argument for skipping a coat. The argument is usually "it'll look fine," and that's the part worth examining separately from the arithmetic.
Why "it'll look fine" usually isn't true on a color change
A single coat of paint, even a high-quality one, is rarely fully opaque over a different existing color, especially when the change is dramatic — light to dark, dark to light, or a jump in saturation. What actually happens with one coat over a color change is uneven hiding: roller and brush strokes catch and hold slightly more paint than the flat field between them, so the old color shows through faintly in a mottled pattern that's often invisible up close under even light and very visible from across the room, or under a lamp at a raking angle in the evening. It's not that one coat "doesn't work" — it's that it produces a specific, recognizable flaw (patchy, strobing coverage) that a second coat resolves by evening out exactly those inconsistencies.

When one coat genuinely is enough
None of this means two coats are mandatory in every case. Some higher-build "one-coat" paint products are also formulated with more solids specifically to improve single-coat hiding, though even those manufacturers typically still recommend two coats for a genuine color change on the label. Adding a third wall type: an accent wall inside the same room

The checklist for a whole room

Larger, open-plan spaces: the same formula, bigger numbers
An open-concept living and dining space measuring 20 by 24 feet with 9-foot ceilings, three doors, and four windows works through the exact same steps: a perimeter of 2 × (20 + 24) = 88 feet, a gross wall area of 88 × 9 = 792 square feet, minus 3 × 20 + 4 × 15 = 120 square feet of openings, leaving 672 square feet of paintable wall. At two coats that's 1,344 total painted square feet, or 1,344 ÷ 350 ≈ 3.84 gallons — rounding up to a clean 4 gallons. Larger rooms like this are exactly where it's worth checking whether your specific paint line sells in bulk containers beyond a single gallon, since a job this size is buying multiple full gallons anyway; the underlying arithmetic doesn't change, only the number of cans on the receipt.
One thing that does become easier at this scale: the quart-level rounding built into the calculator matters proportionally less. Rounding a 0.42-gallon need up to a half-gallon on a small wall changes your purchase by 19%; rounding a 3.84-gallon need up to 4 gallons on a big room is a 4% difference. Buying "a little extra" is baked into the math either way, but it costs you progressively less, proportionally, as the job gets bigger.
Recoat windows matter as much as coat count
Two coats only behave like two coats if the first one is genuinely dry — not just dry to the touch, but past whatever recoat window the specific product's label specifies, which varies by product and by humidity in the room. Rolling a second coat over a first coat that hasn't finished curing can drag, lift, or unevenly flatten the still-soft layer underneath, which produces exactly the patchy look a second coat is supposed to fix.
