How Much Paint Do You Need? A Room-by-Room Guide
Every paint project starts with the same annoying question: how many cans do I actually need? Buy too little and you're back at the store mid-roll with a color that might not match the batch on your wall. Buy too much and a half-full gallon sits in the garage for years. The good news is that the underlying math is simple arithmetic, not guesswork.
The four numbers that matter
Every paint calculation comes down to four inputs: the wall's gross area (width times height), the area taken up by doors and windows you won't paint, the number of coats you're applying, and the paint's spread rate — the square footage one gallon covers, printed on the can. A standard interior door opening removes about 20 square feet, and a standard window removes about 15 square feet, so subtracting those from the gross area gets you closer to the real, paintable surface.
Worked example: a bedroom wall
Say you're painting a 12-foot-wide, 9-foot-tall wall with one door and one window. The gross area is 12 × 9 = 108 square feet. Subtract the door (20) and the window (15) and you're left with 73 square feet of actual paintable wall. Planning two coats brings the total painted area to 146 square feet. At a typical spread rate of 350 square feet per gallon, that's 146 ÷ 350 ≈ 0.42 gallons — which rounds up to half a gallon, or two quarts, since paint isn't sold in arbitrary fractions.
Worked example: a single accent wall
An accent wall is usually painted on its own, not folded into a whole-room total, and it's common to skip subtracting openings if the wall you've chosen doesn't have any. A 15-foot by 8-foot accent wall with a single coat is 120 square feet, or 120 ÷ 350 ≈ 0.34 gallons — again rounding up to half a gallon. Note that a single coat is often enough for an accent wall in the same color family as before, but a bold, dramatic color change usually still wants two coats (sometimes over a tinted primer) for even, opaque coverage.
Worked example: a whole living room
For a full room, add up each wall separately rather than using the room's floor area — floor area and wall area are unrelated numbers, and mixing them up is one of the most common paint-math mistakes. A 14 × 16 foot room with 9-foot ceilings has a perimeter of 2 × (14 + 16) = 60 feet, so the total wall area (ignoring openings for a moment) is 60 × 9 = 540 square feet. Subtract a typical allowance for two doors and three windows (2 × 20 + 3 × 15 = 85 square feet) to get 455 square feet of paintable wall. Two coats brings that to 910 square feet, or 910 ÷ 350 ≈ 2.6 gallons — three gallons, in practice, since the calculator always rounds up to the nearest quart.
Why the spread rate on the can matters more than you'd think
The 350 square feet per gallon figure is a reasonable default, but it's exactly that — a default. Flat and matte finishes often spread a little further than glossy ones. Textured walls, unprimed drywall, and very porous surfaces soak up more paint per square foot than the label assumes, sometimes dropping real-world coverage by 10–20%. A simple checklist before you buy
- Measure width and height of each wall you're painting, not the room's floor dimensions.
- Count doors and windows on that specific wall, not the whole room, if you're painting one wall at a time.
- Decide on one or two coats before you shop — it doubles (or doesn't) your gallon count.

- Round up to the nearest quart or gallon; paint isn't sold in decimals.

Primer: the coat that isn't always optional
The four-input math above assumes you're applying paint to a wall that's ready for it, but "ready" sometimes means primer first, and that's a separate can with its own coverage math — not a free add-on. A coat of primer is worth budgeting for whenever you're painting bare or patched drywall, covering a stain (water, smoke, marker) that might bleed through topcoat, or making a dramatic color change, especially going from a dark wall to a light one. Skipping primer in those cases doesn't just risk a patchier finish; it can mean a third topcoat instead of a second one, which costs more in paint and time than the primer would have. When you do need it, run the primer through the same calculator as a separate one-coat job on the same net area — primer and topcoat are bought and measured independently, not combined into one gallon count.
Not every project needs it: a fresh coat of the same or a similar color, over paint that's already in good condition, usually goes straight to topcoat. The rule of thumb is that primer earns its cost when the surface or the color jump is doing something the topcoat alone can't cover evenly.
Sheen changes the real-world coverage number too
The 350 square feet per gallon figure used throughout this guide is a reasonable default for a mid-sheen (eggshell or satin) interior wall paint, but sheen and coverage are linked. Flatter finishes (flat, matte) tend to spread a little further per gallon because they contain more pigment and less binder relative to glossier formulas; high-gloss and semi-gloss paints, more common on trim and doors than whole walls, often spread a bit less per gallon and show roller and brush marks more readily, which is part of why they're rarely used for large wall areas. None of this changes the arithmetic — area, openings, coats, spread rate — it just means the spread-rate number you plug in should come from the specific can you're buying, not a single number applied to every project.
Ceilings use the same formula, with one difference
Ceiling paint is calculated exactly like a wall: length times width for the gross area (a ceiling has no doors or windows to subtract, so gross area and net area are the same number), multiplied by coats, divided by spread rate. The one real difference is that ceilings are almost always painted in a flat sheen regardless of what's on the walls, since a flatter finish hides minor surface imperfections that overhead lighting would otherwise highlight, and ceiling paint is frequently tinted slightly to reduce yellowing over time rather than being pure white. If you're painting a ceiling and its walls in the same session, run them as two separate calculations rather than one combined total — they're different areas, and often different sheens and even different products entirely.
Surface prep affects your paint math before you even open a can
Everything above assumes a wall that's clean, sound, and ready to roll. It's also worth cracking a window. Paint — and the primer that sometimes precedes it — off-gasses volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as it dries, so ventilate the room and follow the specific product's label instructions for dry and cure times, especially in a small or enclosed space.
Matching an old can for a touch-up or a small repair
If you're patching a small area of an existing wall rather than repainting the whole thing, the area math still applies — a patch a couple of feet across is a tiny fraction of a gallon — but the harder problem is usually matching the existing color exactly, not calculating how much you need. Paint batches vary slightly between production runs even for the identical product and color code, so a can bought today to touch up a wall painted three years ago can be a faint but visible shade off, especially under strong daylight. If you have leftover paint from the original job, use it first; if you don't, most paint retailers can color-match from a chip of the existing wall (cut from an inconspicuous spot, like behind an outlet cover) more reliably than from a color name or code alone, since the original product's exact formulation may have changed since it was first mixed.
