Color Contrast in Interior Design: Why Some Walls 'Pop' and Others Don't
Two paint colors can look completely different in how they interact depending on what's next to them. A terracotta wall against crisp white trim reads as bold and defined; the same terracotta against a warm beige can look muddy and indistinct, even though the wall color itself hasn't changed at all. The reason isn't mysterious — it's contrast, and it can actually be measured with a formula, not just judged by eye.
What contrast ratio actually measures
Contrast ratio is a number from 1:1 (two identical colors) to 21:1 (pure black against pure white) that describes how much two colors' brightness differs. The math behind it comes from web accessibility standards (the WCAG, or Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), which were built to make sure text stays readable against its background — but the same formula works just as well for a wall color against its trim, its molding, or the frames on a gallery wall.
How the ratio is actually calculated

Frames in a tone close to the wall color blend together into a softer, more unified block — useful if you want the photos or art inside the frames to be the star, rather than the frames themselves.

Take a terracotta wall at hex #9c4221 against a light background at #f6f7f9. Running the relative-luminance formula on both colors gives a contrast ratio of about 6.09:1 — comfortably past the 4.5:1 threshold for a clearly defined pairing, though short of the stricter 7:1 threshold sometimes used for maximum readability. That's a concrete, useful number: it tells you this particular terracotta will read as a distinctly bold accent against that background, not a subtle, blended one.

Keep the two uses separate: one is about a room looking intentional, the other is about whether people can actually read something.

Getting the hex codes without a color-picker tool
Running two colors through the calculator means having their hex codes on hand, and the most reliable source is the paint brand's own product page or swatch card, which almost always lists the exact hex value alongside the color name — more reliable than eyeballing a code from a photo, since screens, camera sensors, and lighting all shift how a color is captured. If a hex code isn't published for a color you already own on a physical swatch, most phone camera apps now include a color-picker or "magnifier" style tool that can sample a color from a photo and report an approximate hex value; it won't be laboratory-exact, but it's precise enough to compare two colors against each other meaningfully, which is what the ratio is actually for.
Doors and other trim-adjacent surfaces
Interior doors are worth running through the same check as trim and molding, since a door is effectively a large, vertical block of color inserted into a wall the same way a picture frame is — a door painted the same color as the wall around it recedes and reads as part of the wall, while a door in a contrasting color (a common look in a hallway or entry) becomes its own focal point, and the contrast ratio tells you in advance roughly how strongly it will separate from its surroundings.
