Wallpaper Rolls, Pattern Repeat, and What 'Waste' Really Costs You
"Buy a bit extra for the pattern repeat" is common advice, but it undersells what's actually happening: a bigger repeat doesn't cost you a little extra paper, it can knock a whole strip off how many fit on a roll, and that one change ripples into needing meaningfully more rolls for the exact same wall. The mechanism, in one wall
Take a 10-foot-wide, 9-foot-tall accent wall, using a standard 20.5-inch by 33-foot roll. With no pattern repeat, each strip is cut to the wall height — 108 inches — and a 396-inch roll yields 3 strips (396 ÷ 108 ≈ 3.67, floored to 3). The wall needs 6 strips (120 inches of width ÷ 20.5-inch roll width, rounded up), plus one spare strip for mistakes or future repairs, for 7 strips total — which needs 3 rolls (7 ÷ 3, rounded up).
Move to a 20-inch pattern repeat and each strip grows to 128 inches. That's still only 3 strips per roll (3 × 128 = 384, still under 396), so the roll count doesn't move: still 3 rolls, for the identical 7 strips. But push the repeat to 40 inches and a strip becomes 148 inches — and 3 × 148 = 444 no longer fits inside a 396-inch roll, so the roll only yields 2 strips. The same 7 strips now need 4 rolls, a 33% increase over the no-repeat count, from a repeat length that "only" added 40 inches to each strip.
The same effect, a wider wall
The jump gets more dramatic as the wall gets wider, because more strips means more rolls riding on the same per-roll strip count. A 12-foot-wide, 9-foot-tall wall needs 8 strips (144 inches ÷ 20.5, rounded up) plus one spare, for 9 total. At no repeat, that's 3 strips per roll and 3 rolls needed. At a 40-inch repeat, it's the same drop to 2 strips per roll, but now 9 strips over 2 per roll needs 5 rolls — a jump from 3 rolls to 5, a 67% increase, for the same reason as the narrower wall: one repeat length crossed a threshold and quietly cut the roll's productivity by a third.
Why it's a step, not a slope
This is the detail that catches people comparing wallpapers by their printed repeat number alone: the cost of a repeat isn't proportional to its length, it's proportional to whether it pushes your specific wall height over a multiple-of-roll-length threshold. Reading a repeat number on a label

A wallpaper with "0" or no listed repeat is a random-match or non-repeating pattern, like a plain texture or a small, dense print with no visible motif to align — the easiest and most material-efficient category to hang. Small repeats, roughly under 12 inches, are common on fine stripes, small geometrics, and dense florals. A third wall, and where the jumps land

Run that wall at four repeat lengths and the roll counts land at 5 rolls for a 0-inch repeat, 5 rolls at 12 inches, 7 rolls at 24 inches, and 7 rolls at 40 inches.
