Wall paneling has moved well beyond the formal dining rooms it's traditionally associated with, and today's most common styles — beadboard, board-and-batten, shiplap, and raised-panel wainscoting — each bring a distinct look, a different installation difficulty, and a different price point. Picking the right one starts with knowing what actually separates them.
Raised-panel wainscoting: the traditional, formal option
Classic wainscoting uses recessed or raised rectangular panels framed by molding, typically running from the floor to chair-rail height (about a third of the way up the wall). It's the style most associated with historic homes, formal dining rooms, and libraries, and it reads as the most traditional and labor-intensive of the group — genuine raised-panel wainscoting is often built from separate pieces of molding and panel stock, or purchased as pre-assembled kits sized to a standard wall height. It's typically the most expensive style to install and the one most often left to a finish carpenter rather than a first-time DIYer, though pre-fab MDF panel kits have made a simplified version much more approachable.
Beadboard: the classic cottage look
Beadboard is a series of narrow, vertical grooves ("beads") milled into long boards or, more commonly today, a single sheet of MDF or plywood manufactured to look like individual boards. It's strongly associated with cottage, farmhouse, and coastal interiors, and it's a popular choice for bathrooms, mudrooms, and kitchen walls because pre-primed MDF beadboard resists moisture reasonably well and installs quickly with adhesive and a nail gun. Board-and-batten: a modern, geometric statement
Board-and-batten uses flat vertical boards (or simply the wall itself) with narrower strips — battens — nailed over the seams at even intervals, creating a rhythm of vertical lines. It reads as more modern and graphic than traditional wainscoting, and it's popular as a full-wall or full-room treatment in bedrooms, entryways, and accent walls, not just below chair-rail height. Shiplap: the rustic, horizontal look
Shiplap uses horizontal boards with a rabbeted edge that overlaps the board below it, creating a small shadow line at each horizontal seam. Popularized by farmhouse-style interiors, it's one of the more forgiving styles to install since the boards' overlapping edges hide minor gaps, and pre-primed shiplap planks are widely available at home centers cut to common wall heights. Mixing styles in one room
It's increasingly common to combine two styles rather than pick just one — a board-and-batten lower half topped with a simple chair rail is a lighter, more budget-friendly stand-in for full raised-panel wainscoting, and a shiplap accent wall paired with painted beadboard in an adjoining bathroom can tie two rooms together without repeating the same treatment everywhere. The one rule worth keeping in mind when mixing styles is consistency of scale: keep batten spacing, board width, and reveal gaps similar across a connected run of rooms, so the transition from one style to the next reads as a deliberate choice rather than two unrelated projects.
A worked example: where the waste allowance actually goes
Take a 120-inch-wide, 96-inch-tall bathroom wall being covered in 32 × 96-inch beadboard sheets. Dividing the wall's width by one sheet's width gives 120 ÷ 32 = 3.75, rounded up to 4 columns; the sheet height matches the wall height exactly, so that's 1 row — 4 sheets to fully cover the wall. Working above a chair rail
Most wainscoting and panel work happens within easy reach from the floor, but a full-height board-and-batten or shiplap accent wall, or trim work near a tall ceiling, means time on a ladder or step stool. Keep it on stable, level footing, and don't lean or overreach to place one more nail near the top of a run — move the ladder instead.
Prepping the wall underneath
Panels that are nailed or glued directly to an existing painted wall generally don't require sanding the old paint at all — a clean, dry surface and, for adhesive-based installs, a few strategic swipes with a scuffing pad for grip are usually enough, which sidesteps a real hazard rather than just a hassle. MDF, real wood, and where moisture matters
Most affordable beadboard, shiplap, and panel-kit wainscoting sold today is primed MDF (medium-density fiberboard) rather than solid wood, and the distinction matters most in rooms with sustained humidity or the possibility of direct water contact. MDF handles normal indoor humidity fine once it's properly primed and painted on all faces and edges, which is standard for factory-primed panel products, but a bathroom with poor ventilation, a mudroom exposed to standing water, or any spot where panels might get genuinely wet and stay that way is a place where solid wood or a moisture-rated panel product is worth the extra cost over standard MDF, which can swell or delaminate at cut edges that weren't fully sealed. Sealing every cut edge with primer or paint before installation, not just the visible face, is the detail that most affects how well any panel product holds up in a humid room.
Painting panels after installation
Most panel styles are installed pre-primed and painted afterward, once nail holes are filled and caulk has sealed the seams between boards and against the ceiling, floor, and adjoining walls — caulking those seams is what gives paneling its crisp, built-in look rather than a visibly applied-on-top appearance. Tools worth having before you start
Beyond the panels themselves, a level long enough to check an entire run at once (a 4-foot level, minimum) catches a wall that's slightly out of plumb before it turns into a visibly crooked top row of board-and-batten. A stud finder matters even for glued-on panels, since a few nails into studs at load-bearing points give an adhesive bond real mechanical backup rather than relying on glue alone, especially near outside corners where panels see the most bumps and stress over time. And a miter saw or a good miter box makes the corner cuts on chair rail, batten trim, or panel molding meaningfully cleaner than a hand saw and a square, which matters most exactly where the eye is drawn first — the corners.
